How to Prepare Your Home for a Real Estate Photography Shoot in Phoenix

If you've ever looked at a listing and thought, "wow, those photos are stunning" — chances are the home was well-prepared before the photographer ever walked through the door. Great real estate photography is a team effort, and the work that happens before the shoot is just as important as what happens during it.

At Valley View Photo, we photograph homes across the Phoenix metro every day — from Scottsdale to Gilbert, Glendale to Chandler. And in our experience, the listings that get the most attention online are the ones where the seller (or their agent) took the time to prepare.

Here's exactly what to do before your real estate photography shoot.

Start Outside: Curb Appeal Sets the Tone

  • Mow, edge, and blow. Fresh-cut grass and clean borders instantly elevate the look of any yard.

  • Remove cars from the driveway. A clear driveway makes the home look larger and more accessible.

  • Put away hoses, trash cans, and yard tools. These are easy to overlook but show up clearly in photos.

  • Sweep the front porch and walkway. Dust and debris are surprisingly visible on camera.

  • Add a fresh doormat or potted plant if you have one — small touches make a big difference.

Phoenix tip: If your shoot is in the morning, make sure any sprinkler residue or wet spots on pavers have had time to dry. Early light is beautiful here, but wet concrete reflects oddly in photos.

Bright and decluttered living room staged for real estate photography in Phoenix Arizona

Living Spaces: Clean, Declutter, Depersonalize

The goal indoors is to make the home feel spacious, bright, and move-in ready — not lived-in.

  • Clear countertops completely. In kitchens and bathrooms especially, less is more. Put away appliances, soap dispensers, and anything that doesn't need to be there. Decorative settings and small items are okay, and if well done often make for great photos, however.

  • Remove personal photos and memorabilia. Buyers need to imagine themselves in the space, and family photos make that harder.

  • Tuck away cords and chargers. Electronics and tangled cables are distracting in listing photos.

  • Fluff and arrange pillows and throws. Beds should be made neatly, and couch cushions should look intentional.

  • Turn on all interior lights. This includes lamps, under-cabinet lighting, and pendant lights. More light = better photos.

  • Open all blinds and curtains. Natural light is your best friend, and we want as much of it as possible.

Kitchen & Bathrooms: The Detail Rooms

These two rooms sell homes — and buyers scrutinize them closely online.

Kitchen:

  • Clear the sink completely (no dishes, sponges, or drying racks)

  • Wipe down counters, stovetop, and appliance fronts

  • If you have a fruit bowl or a single decorative item, that's fine — but keep it minimal

  • Put a fresh hand towel on the oven handle for a clean, styled look

Bathrooms:

  • Remove all personal hygiene products from counters and shower ledges

  • Close the toilet lid (always)

  • Hang fresh, neatly folded towels

  • Clean mirrors — smudges show up clearly on camera

Bedrooms: Simple and Serene

  • Make every bed neatly — hospital corners if you can manage it

  • Remove laundry, bags, shoes, or anything on the floor

  • Clear nightstands down to one or two items maximum

  • Close closet doors unless the closet is a selling feature worth showing

Garage & Extra Spaces

Don't forget the spaces buyers always want to see.

  • Clear the laundry room of dirty clothes and clutter

  • Stage any patio or outdoor entertaining area — patio furniture should be clean and arranged intentionally
